Another Engine

I need to stay off the On30 Marketplace site.

This 0-4-0 kind of threw itself at me. Too good a deal to pass up. It appears to be a later production unit with owner-added DCC (Digitrax, I think). I am tentatively designating it #14, abandoning my previous numbering scheme.

It's a nice looking engine and a very smooth runner.

On close examination, I noticed a few things about this engine. It has a builder's plate on each side of the smoke box, which 0-4-0 #6 does not. Both 0-4-2 's have builder's plates. A small difference is that the bell hanger on this engine is painted black; the one on #6 was gold plated, although I painted it when I repainted the engine a few months back.

The real "tell" is under the engine. Engine #6 has the original pickup design, with small spring-loaded pins that bear on the back of the wheels. This design apparently proved unreliable, so it was replaced with phosphor bronze wipers. The new engine has this configuration.

Plus, this has the decoder installed in the cab.

All in all, I feel like I scored a good purchase.
