Lockwood & San Emigdio: Mid-July Progress Report

About six weeks in, I've already exceeded my expectations for progress over the summer, and I still have a solid couple of weeks left.

The mainline track is done and operational, passing siding and spurs in and operational, turntable built and working. Some scenery roughed in. Basic controls up and working.

I may replace one section of track, where I used Atlas HO track. If so, I'll do it soon.

Beyond that, I will likely take a break from layout work and do some other things. I have some cars to paint and decal, and a BTS cabin kit to build.

Here are a couple of photos of progress as it stands in the second half of July.

A nice train with three boxcars and a gondola, all lettered for L&SE.

Most of the active locomotive roster is in this picture -- Shay #11, outside frame 4-4-0 #23, 4-4-0 #19, and 2-6-0 #27 in the foreground.

7/21/25: I've been working on decaling locomotives and cars. Pictures show locomotives 23 and 27, and the first of three boxcars. All still need clear flat spray and weathering.

I stripped paint from two more boxcars a few days ago and am waiting for a good day to paint them -- I don't have a spray booth, so I do all my spray painting outdoors, which means I'm constrained by weather.

I also took a leap and ordered a Soundtraxx decoder, which I will install in the 2-6-0. It's a good, quiet runner; it has a speaker already installed; and if I botch it up, it's my most easily repairable/replaceable engine. The decoder should be here end of this week or early next week.
