Bridges and tunnels are such great scenic elements that I nearly always include one or more, and this project is no exception. The tunnel here is really short, only about four or five inches, and originally I was going to leave it just bare rock, with no portals or liner, but it just seemed a little naked that way. So I've added a wood liner and basic portals.
I also ballasted the track through the tunnel and added "dirt" along the sides, since it will be next to impossible to do that once the tunnel liner is installed.
Once the glue dries, I'll double check that the rail is in gauge and secure through the tunnel, then glue the tunnel liner and the top of the ridge in place.
Not awful, but kind of bare. |
The timber portal defines the space and makes it more of a focal point. More focal points makes the layout seem bigger. |
The back side. |
Here it is on the workbench. |
11/17/24: Top of the mountain glued in place and cracks puttied. I may get to detail painting by the end of this week.
